Alex wants to win “The Arnold” body building contest. Describe the skeletal muscle and cardiovascular adaptations that occur with resistance training. Comment on molecular mechanisms of protein synthesis and degradation. After getting large muscles and winning “The Arnold”, Alex then decides to embrace cardiovascular endurance training. Describe the skeletal muscle and cardiovascular adaptations following endurance training. Comment on morphological changes as well as make conclusions about overall health.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer :)

The resistance training decreases post-exercise hypotension, which helps to improve nitric oxide (NO) synthesis. This effect causes decrease in the peripheral vascular resistance and a decrease in sympathetic nerve activity. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures both decrease in this training. However, the resistance training increases total peripheral resistance due to increased mass of muscles. This training also increases cardiac dimensions, cardiac output, stroke work, and afterload-corrected catalogs of left ventricular function. The skeletal muscles now exert considerably more force due to hypertrophy. These muscles also adapt to soreness.

After the resistance training, the cardiovascular system has obtained a great number of adaptations. The same adaptations also found in cardiovascular endurance training. However, due to reduced resistance training, the muscle mass will be reduced but cardiovascular adaptations will have remained. Overall, the body of the person is still healthy but not strengthy.
