Explain why it is a poor idea to vacuum filter a warm organic liquid

Explain why it is a poor idea to vacuum filter a warm organic liquid

Solutions

Expert Solution

Under low pressure boiling point of organic liquid decreases and evaporation of liquid increases rapidly, heat from the solvent is lost due to latent heat of vapourisation, so the organic liquid under filtration gets cooled, because of cooling effect the organic compound dissolved in liquid may precipitate and hence effective filtration is not possible.

Boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which the pressure of liquid becomes equal to atmospheric pressure, when vacuum is applied the external pressure decreased and hence liquid starts Boiling earlier at low temperature and hence evaporation increases

1. Why organic solvent is often used in liquid-liquid extraction? 2. Name the adverse effects which occur when a trayed absorption tower operates at too high and too low vapor flow rate? 3. Component separation involving two or more phases (regardless of technique) occurs because systems want to achieve equlibrium and as a result, mass transfer occurs. In a scenario where this mass transfer is particularly slow, would it be more accurate to model a system based on phase equlibrium...

It is desired to use a rotary vacuum filter to separate slurry containing 20 kg of water per kilogram of solid material. Tests on the rotary filter at the conditions to be used for the filtration have indicated that the dimensionless ratio α/β' is 0.6 and 19 kg of filtrate (not including wash water) is obtained for each 27.8 kg of slurry. The temperature and pressure of the surroundings are 25 oC and 1 atm, respectively. The pressure drop to...

A separator divides a process stream into three phases: a liquid organic stream, a liquid aqueous stream, and a gas stream. The feed stream contains three components, all of which are present to some extent in the separated streams. The composition and flow rate of the feed stream are known. All the streams will be at the same temperature and pressure. The phase equilibria for the three phases is available. How many design variables need to be specified in order...
