Alcohol is a drug. Like any other drug it has mind altering effects. Alcohol does not have the same effect on the brain as other drugs like morphine, cocaine or heroin but has effects that can make individuals addicted to it. People drink alcohol for various reasons. Individuals first try alcohol usually at an adolescent stage.
Most people drink during that age because they succumb to Peer Pressure. Not just at an early age are people victim to succumbing to peer pressure but also later in life when co-workers decide on partying on a fine Friday night, and when a person refuses a drink or says "Thanks, but I don't drink", he is made fun of and demeaned if he does not drink.
Stress is another reason why people opt to drink. The rat race that most people compete with these days, or fighting against the clock to get their work done, are ought to be stressed with a demanding job. Work is not the only reason for stress. It could be other things like coping with death of a loved one, break-ups or any kind of pressure, makes a person resort to alcohol as it's effects help alleviate their negative feelings. Alcohol helps them get tipsy which gives them a temporary high, that helps them forget their problems for a while.
Some people have Inhibitions, which they overcome by consuming alcohol, Not everyone is as confident as we may think. A lot of people are shy out there, they are intimidated by the opposite gender or by someone of higher authority. They need a couple of drinks to make themselves feel confident to approach people who they couldn't have if they were sober.
Societal/Media Influence, every high rated show that you watch on television will include an advertisement, advertising alcohol brands. There's something called Subliminal Persuasion, which is when a company or person tries to persuade the audience with hidden messages. People who are exposed to alcohol more are likely to drink more than the one's who are not.
People choose to drink alcohol or induce other drugs for various reasons, some because it causes release of dopamine, which is responsible in making a person feel happy and some drink because it makes them more accepted in a group. It is a choice that needs to be made reasonably.
