Lead lime can be converted into lead when heated in a hydrogen atmosphere.

- Write down a modern reaction scheme.

- Suggest a way to carry out the experiment that clearly reveals that water is formed during the reaction.

Solutions

Expert Solution

First, we write the chemical formula of the substances in the system:

Lead lime: PbO

Lead: Pb

From the information given, we know that water is a rection product, so hydrogen must be a reagent due to the mass conservation law. The reaction scheme is:

PbO + H2 Pb + H2O

For a hydrogen atmosphere, we must heat lead lime (PbO) to increase the molecular disorder. The suggested temperature for this process is 350ºC.

A way to carry out this reaction is having a kitasato with a little amount of lead lime (PbO). We make vaccum in it and replace air eith hydrogen (H2). Using a burner we increase the temperature of the flask untill 350ªC. We need to be carefully, because steam will expand applying a big pressure onto the flask walls.
