A patient was admitted into the hospital and was diagnosed with with Type I diabetes mellitus. As he was ready for discharge, you review his discharge plan with him. Noticing that his urinalysis shows that he has ketones in his urine, how would you explain this to him?

Urinary ketones indicate that the body is using fat rather than carbohydrate as an energy source.
Ketone bodies are created when excess blood glucose is transformed into fat by the liver.
When blood glucose is high, plasma proteins convert excess glucose to ketones.
As the body stores extra glucose as fat, ketones are stripped from carbohydrates and appear in the urine.
