Indicate the materials that are appropriate for extinguishing a fire involved with benzoic acid and naphthalene

Why is frequent venting nescesary when extracting the diethyl ether solution with aqueous base

Solutions

Expert Solution

QUESTION-1:

BENZOIC ACID:

Firefighting media:: 1. Dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or regular foam. 2. For larger fires, use water spray, fog or regular foam. 3. Water is usd in flooding quantities as a fog, solid streams of water may be ineffected.

NAPHTHALENE::

Firefighting media::    1. Dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, sand, foam, steam or water fog, alcohol-resistant fog.    2. Cool containing vessels by water spray.

QUESTION-2:

Separatory funnel is the tool of trade for liquid-liquid extractions. The separatory funnel is shaken and vented to- 1. increase the surface area between the two layers. 2. speed the attainment of equilibrium.    The organic layer (ether) is then separated from the aqueous layer .

Frequent venting is necessary to avoid pressure build-up, otherwise separatory funnel could explode.

Draw a flow diagram for the separation of benzoic acid, phenol, and naphthalene. Enough detail must be included for someone to perform the experiment, however, you do not need to include masses or volumes ( this question pertains to acid/base extractions, ect. ) Please be neat, as I seek guidance and mastery, thank you.

Experiment: Extraction to seperate benzoic acid and naphthalene. Procedure- Place 2 g of a 1:1 (by weight) mixture of benzoic acid and naphthalene in a small beaker; record the exact mass of the mixture in your notebook. Add 35 mL of dichloromethane to the beaker and stir until the solid mixture has completely dissolved. Carefully pour the solution into a separatory funnel. I have an unknown mixture of Benzoic acid, Dimethyl Terephthalate, and Naphthalene dissolved in Dichloromethane. I need to separate the mixture to find the composition using some sort of acid base reation and a distillation. How would I do that? I think that I could use steam distillation to remove the naphthalne but im not really sure on that. Any help would be apprectiated. I start with 25mL of the unknown mixture.

Propose a method to separate a mixture containing phenol, benzoic acid, naphthalene, and p-nitro aniline. Phenol is soluble in sodium hydroxide solution but insoluble in neutral water or sodium bicarbonate solution. Benzoic acid is soluble in either sodium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate solutions. Write out the structures of the molecules in your scheme.
