An extraction .............. is a convenient way to display each of the steps of a reactive (or acid-base) extraction.
First let's understand extraction:
Extraction is a process of extracting the target material from a solid by dissolving the material into a solvent (solid-liquid extraction) or extracting the target material from a solvent byusing another solvent.
An acid - base extraction is a type of liquid - liquid extraction in which if one of the compounds to be extracted is an acid or a base, the extraction is done by manipulating the solubility of the compound.
An example is pasted below:
Suppose we have a ether containing carboxylic acid and we want to extract it
Step1: Add a base to the ether to react with the acid in it to form salt.
Step2: Select a solvent, water in this case, to dissolve the salt of the acid.
Step3: Using drying remove the ether from the aqueous layer
Step4: The aqueous solution which is now basic is treated with an acid to precipitate the carboxylic acid which is insoluble in water.
Now to note all these steps a FLOW DIAGRAM / Stepwise Diagram with structures as a prelab routine is a convenient way to display each of the steps of a reactive (or acid-base) extraction.
