The three pillars of a diversity and inclusion program are:
1. Remove prejudices and build a diverse workforce
Having a diverse workforce provides many tangible benefits to a company. It offers several benefits such as generation of different perspectives, increased productivity and creativity, improves the company’s reputation. For example, Qatargas is developing a diverse workforce to leverage the knowledge and expertise of employees from around the world.
2. Promote inclusiveness and innovation
Companies ought to promote an inclusive workplace, in which the working environment values the differences among the employees. To be successful and creative, the company should accept the diversity of the employee’s background and their perspectives. An inclusive workplace improves productivity and employee commitment, while minimizing discrimination and inequality. For example, Google is working on eliminating biasness in its systems and people process.
3. Build employee awareness around the business
Companies should create resource groups to build a sense of belonging among different employees. This helps in creating opportunities for self-development and improves the performance of the companies in the long run. For example, Google currently has 15 Employee Resource Groups around the world that allow the employees to connect with other people and explore mentoring and volunteer opportunities.
