Expert Solution

Path of food through digestive system

Once we take the food bite in mouth, the digestion process starts from here itself.

1.mouth,salivary gland in tongue starts producing saliva.Chewing and breaking mechanical process of digestion occurs here.

2.Then bolus comes to pharynx and esophagus region -it is the portion of the digestive tract and carry the food to the stomach through various round of contractions.

3.Now bolus reaches to stoach via opening of oesophagal lower sphincter. In stomach, mixing and grinding of food occurs through muscular contractions peristalsis and convert the food into paste form.

4.Then move into the intestine,in small intestine (duodenum, jejunum and ileum) breaking down of bolus(food) occurs through digestive enzymes released by pancreas and bile from liver ( which comes from the store of gall bladder).Duodenum takes part in breaking down the food(breaking down carbohydrate, protein and fat) and jejunum and ileum absorps the nutrients and release them into bloodstream.

5.Now the leftover moves to the large intestine. The large intestine has five regions caecum, ascending, transverse, desending and sigmoid colon. The appendix connects to the ascending colon. The colon helps in processing the food and absorbs the water and stores the stool in sigmoid colon.

6.Upon the filling of sigmoid colon, the food wate moves to rectum for excretion with the help of wall anal sphincter contractions.

Digestive dysfunctions

1.Gastroesophageal Reflux disease (GERD)

When lower oesophageal sphincter doesn't work properly and doesn't allow food to travel through it and reach to stomach. It causes heart burn and regurgitation.

2.Irritable bowel syndrome

It occurs, when large intestine doesn't properly functions and leads to abdominal pain, bloating excess gas, diarrhea and mucus in stool.
