Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) appear to have anti-replication properties with respect to viruses.  Bats with a high metabolism appear to suppress viral load because of this. Can you recall from earlier elements how metabolism generates ROS?  Explain.

Solutions

Expert Solution

ROS or the reactive oxygen species are the by-products of normal cellular activities.Reactive oxygen species are oxygen-containing radicals that are capable of independent existence with one or more unpaired electrons.ROS also include reactive oxygen-containing compounds without unpaired electrons, such as hydrogen peroxide and singlet oxygen.

The ROS are mainly poduced by the folowing processes in the body

  • In the mitochondria when the molecular oxygen (O2) is reduced to water in the electron transport chain.
  • Due to the Fenton and Haber-Weiss reactions in the body which involves the transition metal ions that breaks down the H2O2 into hydroxyl radicals.
  • Due to the activity of peroxisomes hydrogen peroxide is produced in many reactions. This H2O2 can enter the fentons reactions. The peroxisomes also produce ROS directly.
  • Polyamine reactions and oxidase activity on them produce H2O2

1. Aerobic respiration generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can damage guanine bases, resulting in 8-oxoguanine (8-oxo-dG) lesions, which are the major mutagenic oxidative lesions in the human genome. When DNA polymerases encounter 8-oxo-dG as a template residue, they often catalyze misincorporation of adenine instead of the “correct” cytosine pair. This results in the propagation of G to T transversions, which are common somatic mutations associated with cancer. Crystal structures of a high-fidelity DNA polymerase in the process of both...

some drugs, such as the anti-malarial drug primaquine, generate highly reactive oxygen species during their course of action. Patients who have G6PD deficiency exhibit symptoms of oxidative damage when they are given drugs such as primaquine. Why would patients who have G6PD deficiency suffer from oxidative damage?
