Determine the ∆Sº and ∆Gº using Appendix G for the following reaction.

C2H5OH(l) + 3 O2(g) --> 2 CO2(g) + 2 H2O(l)

Report your answer to four sig figs. Omit unit labels. Only add a - number is the sign is negative. Adding a + to a positive answer messes up the grading.

Solutions

Expert Solution

H0= 2H0CO2 + 2H0H20(L) -H0C2H5OH(L) -3H0O2

H0=2*(-393.51) +2(-285.83) -(-277.6) -3(0)=-1081.08kJ/mol

S0= 2S0CO2 + 2S0H20(L) -S0C2H5OH(L) -3S0O2

S0=2(213.8) +2(70) -(160.7) -3(205.2)=-208.7 J K-1 mol-1

G0=H0-TS0

If we consider room temperature i.e 298K

G0=-1081080 -298*(-208.7)=-1018.8874kJ /mol
