Write balanced half-reactions for the following redox reaction:
2CO2(g)+9H2O(l)+12Fe+2(aq)→ C2H5OH(l)+12OH−(aq)+12Fe+3(aq)
2CO2(g)+9H2O(l)+12Fe+2(aq)→ C2H5OH(l)+12OH−(aq)+12Fe+3(aq)for writing half cell reactions first we have to write unbalanced half cell reactions in oxidation and reduction
Oxidation Fe2+ → Fe3+
Reduction 2CO2 → C2H5OH
now balance oxygen atoms to the both sides and then balance hydrogen with adding OH- and H2O
Oxidation Fe2+ → Fe3+
Reduction 2CO2 + 12H2O → C2H5OH + 3H2O + 12OH-
balance the charge to the both sides by electrons
Oxidation Fe2+ → Fe3++ e-
Reduction 2CO2 + 12H2O + 12e- → C2H5OH + 3H2O + 12OH-
balance the electrons factor to the both sides
Oxidation 12Fe2+(aq) → 12Fe3+(aq) + 12e-
Reduction 2CO2(g) + 9H2O(l) + 12e- → C2H5OH(l) + 12OH-(aq)
the above underline equations are balanced half cell reactions
