Sarah Rose Cavanagh is a psychologist her research is based in response to the theory put forward by psychologist Jean Twenge in the Atlantic. In her article, she has mentioned the bad effect of smartphones being used by children of this age. Twenge states that the magnitude of the effect is very bad on young generation there rise in depression by 27% in the 8th-grade students.
Sarah Rose in her article states that the use of smartphones is not directly related to depression there are several factors that are correlated with depression like the environment of the person using smartphones or social media.
She says it has a positive effect if used properly it improves the capacity of a person to overcome the difficulties. As the study research by Andrew K. Przybylski and Netta Weinstein shows that moderate use of social media and smartphones are not harmful it may be advantageous in a connected world.
She admits that smartphones and social media do have positive as well as negative effects. Positive in the sense that people are connected to each other and it becomes easy to find out the persons having the same interest like in music or other activities throughout the globe. Its moderate use is always helpful.
The negative effect is that the person who is addicted to it becomes very lazy and definitely it affects the mental as well as physical health of that person. The social media is full of negative as well as positive thoughts, it is the person, what he chooses, it can spoil the life or make the life.
As pointed out by Twenge the cases of unprotected sex, use of alcohol smoking and car accidents have reduced compared to the previous generations. This shows the positive outcome of awareness through smartphones. It is important how it is being used by the user.
