The Acme Soy Sauce Company also makes a special sauce with the sugar C6 H12 O6 . How many moles of the sugar are in a packet that contains 1.5 g of the sugar?
Molecular formula of Sugar is C6H12O6.
Let's calculate first molar mass of sugar using atomic masses of the constituent atoms.
Molar mass of sugar C6H12O6 = 6 * At. mass of C + 12 * at. mass of H + 6 * At. mass of O.
= 6 * 12.0 g/mol + 12 * 1.0 g/mol + 6 * 16 g/mol
= 72.0 + 12.0 + 96.0
= 180.0 g/mol
Now,
# of moles of substance = Given mass of susstance in grams / Molar mass of substance in g/mol.
Given mass of the sugar = 1.5 g
Molar mass of Sugar = 180.0 g/mol
So,
# of mles of SUgar in 1.5 g = 1.5 g / 180.0 g = 8.33 * 10-3 mol.
In a packet that contain 1.5 g sugar there are 8.33 * 10-3 mol of the sugar.
