if the pilot light on a gas water heater will not stay lit... what seem to be the problem?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The pilot light controls the heater operation, i.e., burning the gases. If it won't light that means the problem is likely caused by a faulty thermocouple.A thermocouple is a device that detects heat and converts it into the current in a circuit. If there is no heat generated then the light won't lit up and the whole system won't work.

The likely cause of Thermocouple failure is due to 1) It is damaged 2) It being expired, i.e., ran over its lifespan 3) Blocked or dirt got stuck4) Bent or partially defected thermocouple 5) the pilot tue being broken or has some leaks.

So finally if you could just replace the thermocouple the problem is likely to be solved.

(a) While shopping at a thrift store, you purchase a cheap water-heater. The heater has a total surface area of 3 m3 which you decide to insulate using a special kind of insulation material with conductivity of 0.08 W/m K. For normal operation, you want to maintain the inside surface of the insulation at 75C while the outside is at 20C. Additionally, you want to limit heat transfer loss to 200 W. Given your requirements, how thick does the insulation...

I am designing a gas heater and a heat exchanger for a swimming pool. As I am starting with my calculations for the heat exchanger, one of the values that I do not have is the exit temp of the water that enters the swimming pool after the water is heated in the heat exchanger. I know that I need to do a control volume equation to work this out, but I do not know where to go from there....
