Suppose you want to separate a mixture of the following compounds: benzoic acid, m-cresol, p-aminobenzophenone, and napthalene. Come up with a list of steps and chemicals needed to most efficiently isolate all four compounds as solids with the greatest purity possible.
i. dissolve all the compounds in ether and add NaHCO3 solution.
2.Benzoic acid froms sodium benzoate with NaHCO3 and goes in to aq. layer. Organic layer contains remaining three compouns
3. Now separate aq, layer and add aq. HCL, benzoic acid will precipitae out . filter benzoic acid and dry.
4. Take aq. layer having three compound add aq. NaOH. Cresol forms salt with naoh and goes in to aq. layer. Organic layer contains amine and napthalene
5. separate aq. layer and add aq. HCl. followedby ether. cresol comes into ether layer. dry ether to get cresol.
6. take organic layer of step-4 and add aq. HCl. Benzophenone amine forms salt with HCl and goes in to aq. layer.
7. separate aql layer, add aq. NaOH, and extract in to ether, dry ether to get benzophenone amine.
8. take orgnic layer from step no.6 and dry ether to get naphalene
