You should assume that all stroke patients in this activity are experiencing dysfunction due to the lack of oxygen to the affected area which caused damage to those neurons and they are no longer functioning. Explain the effect of each?
• If patient has had a stroke that has right hypoglossal nerve:- There will be lower motor neuron type of paralysis of muscles of the tongue on the right side.( The hypoglossal nerve supplies all the muscles of tongue except palatoglossus.)
• If patient has had a stroke that has left facial nerve:- Two major types are distinguished: - 1). SUPRANUCLEAR LESION- (lesion occurs between cortex and 7th nerve nuclei in the brainstem) and 2). INFRANUCLEAR LESION- (lesion occurs between nuclei in the brainstem and peripheral organs).
If Supranuclear lesion occurs in left facial nerve it causes paralysis of lower part of face of Right side.
If Infranuclear lesion occurs in left facial nerve, it causes paralysis of Left side of Full face i.e along with the eyelids and forehead.
( Facial nerve supplies all the muscles of Facial expression).
• If patient has had a stroke that has left Occulomotor nerve:- ( The occulomotor supplies the extraocular muscles namely Medial rectus, Inferior rectus, Superior Rectus, Inferior Oblique along with Levator palpabre Superioris, ciliaris muscle and Sphincter pupillae.).
If stroke affects left occulomotor ,it will lead to - Ptosis , Lateral squint, Loss of accomodation, Diplopia of the left eye.
