A geographer and social worker are teaming up to investigate whether population density, average distance to a large grocery store, and proportion of park/playground area has an impact on community ‘wellness’. What will these researchers need to do to measure wellness? Why? Use research/statistical terms covered in this course in your explanation.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:

To measure wellness following factors can be considered:

  1. The body to mass ratio of the individual i.e; the BMI(Body mass index) index.
  2. The blood pressure of the adult which is being studied.
  3. The sugar level in blood of the adult which is being studied.
  4. Whether or not a person is suffering from a disease.
  5. The time for which the person does workout in a day.

The reason behind choosing these factors to measure wellness is as follows:

  • The first factor represents how fit a person is that is if his BMI(Body mass index) is very high then he is obese or if BMI(Body mass index) is too low then he is underweight so this can help in knowing the wellness of a person.
  • If the blood pressure and sugar are under control that is they are not very high or very low then the person can be regarded as a fit person.
  • If a person is suffering from a disease then it cannot be the case that he is perfectly fit or healthy, there is surely some health issue associated with that person.
  • A healthy person will workout as more as possible to be fit so the amount of time devoted to workout tells a lot about wellness of a person.

A social worker was interested in determining whether there is a significance difference in the average monthly cost per child for childcare outside the home between state supported facilities and privately owned facilities. Two independent random samples yielded the following information: State Supported Facilities (population 1) Privately Owned Facilities (population 2) Sample Size 64 64 Sample Mean 705 675 Standard Deviation 95 80 Which Excel will calculate the test statistic? a. =(705-675)/(SQRT(95/64+80/64)) b. =(705-675)/(SQRT(95^2/8+80^2/8)) c. =(705-675)/(SQRT(95/8+80/8)) d. =(705-675)/(SQRT(95^2/64+80^2/64))
