In movie " Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story (2003) " . Imagine that you are a counselor who may help to solve the problem. Using theory of Erik Erikson about " nature and nurture" and " trust and mistrust " in this situation.
In the movie, Liz has seen a difficult time as a child. She grown up and her mother's death was a drastic change in her and her studies. She eventually becomes a star student.
Erickson believes more in nurture than nature. Which means he believes the people and situation around us influences us more, we are what we are today becobecof the situation and environment.
Coming to Erickson's trust-mistrust stage, that is the stage we develop during infancy. If treated with care and warmth, such individuals grow up to be more friendly and they trust people more as compared to the ones being btoubro up with less care and negligence.
Keeping in mind these concepts, Liz definitely didn't see a good childhood, so her ability to trust others is less, the nurture factor too plays an important role, which is why she couldn't perform well in her studies too in the beginning.
First of all, if I'm her counselor, I will understand it's been a difficult life for her. Her mother's death, was a sitisituafor her where she felt truly alone. I would have to understand all this. For solving the problem, she herself will have to accept the situation. She did well in the studies which could work out to build her confidence.
