Your neighbor has planted a bed of pink snapdragons in his yard. As the growing season progresses, he notices that some white and red snapdragons are popping up in what was supposed to be a bed of pink flowers. Explain to him the reason that this is happening.

Solutions

Expert Solution

This is happening because of incomplete dominance. Incomplete dominance is a type of inheritance in which the dominant allele is in completely dominant over the recessive allele. Because of this the heterozygotes show an intermediate phenotype which is in between extreme dominant and extreme recessive phenotype.

In case of snapdragons, red and white are the two extreme phenotypes and pink is the intermediate phenotype. Whenever to pink flowers very Cross with one another, they will result in red, pink and white flower in the ratio of 1 : 2 : 1.

Red = RR

White = rr

Pink = Rr

Rr × Rr

Gametes R r
R RR red Rr pink
r Rr pink rr white
