The National Labor Relations Act was passed in 1935. In 1944, 35% of the workforce were members of an organized union. In 2016, private-sector workers (those workers not in the government, schools, etc) only had 6.4% participation in unions.
Is the National Labor Relations Act as important now as it was?
Are the reasons for unionization not as valid and they were?
If that is the case, why are 34.4% of public sector employees unionized today?
Answer) National labor Relations Act is upon my opinion not as important as it was . Today there are a lot of other acts as well in law which protects the safeguard of the workers. Yes This act is still used in any case wherever its required but it is not that important as it was because in those times there was only this law which gave the workers the right to raise their voice but today there are various different acts for different issues.
Yes ,the reasons for unionziation are not as valid as they were because we need to understand this that at those times discrimination and exploitation of workers was pretty common and Employees were forced to join a Union because any single individual could make no difference and this led to strikes and Various different issues creating a tensed environment for workers. But as Companies evolved, new laws came in and Organisations realised that their biggest assets are Employees , disputes started to decrease. Earlier there was no transparency between the type of job they have to do, how many hours they will put in , what payment they will get etc but now everything is clear. Workers know what they have do , and what they will be paid and with the law becoming more aware of the worker's rights, the need for unionziation shallowed.
Public sector is still at a high rate in Employee unionziation is because they didn't evolve as the private sector did. In the public sector, still their is lack of transparency and old people who are accustomed to unionization. Public sector has a linient attitude and the people don't trust their management so they believe in have a collective bargaining in Union. Other reason is that most of the public sector companies does not have a human resource department which can solve their queries , so they believe in being unionized.
It took some research to answer the questions If you can help me with a upvote I would really appreciate it.
Thank you.
