Some of the problems a baby can develop if the mother drinks alcohol or uses drugs while she’s pregnant.

Cigarettes: babies in the womb are exposed to nicotine if the mother smokes. In this situation the bay is at a risk of having;

• Premature birth

• Develop an addiction to nicotine

• Having breathing and behavioral problems

• Die before it is born or may die in the first year of life

Alcohol: drinking during pregnancy may cause babies to be born with various illnesses. Such children are at a risk of;

• Having problems in seeing and hearing

• Being born too small

• Struggling with eating and sleeping

• Having problems in school with learning and paying attention

Illegal drugs: When pregnant women use illegal drugs such as; marijuana, cocaine, Ecstasy, meth, or heroin it can cause a lifelong harm to the babies.

Babies may be born early

• They may grow slowly

• Have withdrawal symptoms, of the drugs such as; fever, vomiting, poor sleep, and shaking

• Have heart problems or a stroke

• May suffer from lifelong disabilities
