A National Center for Health Statistics study states that the height of adult women in the U.S. is approximately normally distributed with a mean ? = 63. 8 inches, and with a standard deviation of ? = 2.8 inches. Amy is 70 inches tall. Determine the probability that a randomly selected woman in the U.S. is taller than Amy. Would this be unusual?
Illustrate by noting relevant details on the normal curve below (label the x axis!), and shading the appropriate region. You may use your calculator to determine the probability, and you must show the syntax of your calculator inputs. Round final result to 4 decimals.
Solution
P (Z>2.2) = 1 - P(Z<2.21) = 1 - 0.9864
P (Z>2.2) = 0.0136
The probability that a randomly selected woman in the U.S. is taller than Amy is 0.0136. Since the probability is less than 0.05, this would be unusual.
