The liver has many functions. Many of those functions have been described in this chapter, though some have been mentioned in previous chapters. Describe at least 5 major functions of the liver.
Answer :- major functions of liver are -
1. Bile production - bile helps small intestine to breakdown and absorbs fat , cholesterol and some vitamins.
2. Metabolism of carbohydrates - carbohydrates are stored in the liver in the form of glycogen. In the liver , glycogen is broken down into glucose and is released into bloodstream to maintain blood glucose level.
3. Vitamin and mineral storage - the liver stores vitamin A,D,E,K and B12. The liver stores iron from haemoglobin in the form of ferritin. The liver also stores and releases copper.
4. Production of albumin - albumin is the most abundant protein in the blood serum . It transports fatty acids and steroid hormones in the blood. It maintains the hydrostatic pressure in the blood vessels.
5. Immunological functions - the liver is a part of mononuclear phagocytic system. It contains high number of kuffer cells that are involved in immune activity.
