1) C5H9OCl 2) C5H8OCl 3) C5H9OCl Which contains the most sp2 hybridized carbon atoms? Please explain how to solve the problem.

Solutions

Expert Solution

answer : 2) C5H8OCl

explanation:

1)

degree of unsaturation = ( 2 C + 2 + N - X - H ) / 2

N = nitrogen

X = halogen

H = hydrogen

C = carbons

C5H9OCl

degree of unsaturation = ( 2 C + 2 + N - X - H ) / 2

                                  = ( 2 x 5 + 2 -1 - 9 ) / 2

                                   = 1

only one double bond possible . so only one sp2 hybridized carbon is present becuase of only one degree of unsaturation

2) C5H8OCl :

degree of unsaturation = ( 2 C + 2 + N - X - H ) / 2

                                  = ( 2 x 5 + 2 -1 - 8 ) / 2

                                   = 1.5

degree of unsaturation is 1.5 this means there is one positive charge present on carbon that is equal to 0.5 unsaturation .so that is sp2 carbon and other is for another degree of unsaturation .
