Based upon a consideration of lattice energies, which of the following compounds is expected to have the highest melting point?
MgCl2
KCl
HCl
Cl2
PCl3
explanation please!
Lattice energy is defined as the energy required to dissociate solids into gaseous ions.
The more ionic the compound it is said to have high lattice energy and if a compound is said to be covalent it has low lattice energy.
Similarly if the product of the charges of ion is more it has high lattice energy.
Its relationship with melting point is that if a compound has higher value of lattice energy then it is said to have high melting point.
Among the above mentioned MgCl2 is said to have high lattice energy which means it has high melting point.
Though the product of charges of PCl3 is higher because of its covalent nature it is said to have low lattice energy than MgCl2.
Among the above mentioned compounds Cl2 is said to have low lattice energy.
Though the product of charges of Cl2 , HCl , NaCl , KCl are same Cl2 is said to have covalent nature whereas NaCl or KCl are ionic which states that Cl2 has a lower lattice energy which means it has low melting point.
Therefore among the above mentioned compounds MgCl2 has higher melting point and Cl2 has low melting point.
