what antimicrobial agent is most commenly used to treat Streptococcus Pyogenes (strep throat) infections?
Penicillin antimicrobial agent is most commenly used to treat Streptococcus Pyogenes (strep throat) infections. Streptococcus pyogenes is a beta-hemolytic bacterium, which also known as the group A streptococci (GAS). It causes a wide variety of diseases in humans. It is the most common bacterial cause of acute pharyngitis. The treatment of choice is penicillin, and the duration of treatment is around 10 days. Use of injected penicillin reduces the risk of acute rheumatic fever. In individuals with a penicillin allergy, erythromycin, other macrolides, and cephalosporins have been shown to be effective treatments. In cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, treatment consists of penicillin and clindamycin and it is given with intravenous immunoglobulin. For toxic shock syndrome and necrotizing fasciitis, high-dose penicillin and clindamycin are used. For necrotizes fasciitis, surgery is required to remove damaged tissue and stop the spread of the infection.
