When looking at potential win-win actions that could reduce carbon dioxide, many analysts talk about the energy paradox or energy-efficiency gap interchangeably. Explain the distinction between the two concepts, and offer two explanations for why either happens
Energy Paradox and Energy Efficiency gap are two distinct concepts and can be defined as follows-
DEFINITIONS-
Energy Paradox- It is also called the Jevons paradox. It states that when there is an improvement in the existing technologies or government introduces new policies, the efficiency of the resource(s) being used increases but also leading to an increase in its demand due to an increase in the consumption.
Energy-Efficiency Gap- It is the difference between the 'actual energy used' and the 'optimal energy used'. The gap shows the difference where the resource can be utilized even more efficiently.
DISTINCTION-
The difference between these two concepts is that the 'Energy Paradox' talks about the ' increase in efficiency due to improvements in factors like technologies and government policies' whereas the ' Energy Efficiency Gap' talks about the ' actual scenario where there exists a gap between the current use of energy and how more efficiently can energy be utilised.'
EXPLANATIONS-
Energy Paradox-
Energy Paradox happens because, when the efficiency of a resource increases, this leads to a reduction in the cost of deriving energy from it. This reduction in the cost of the resource and energy production will make the consumption of the fuel cheaper. This will lead to an increase in the demand for fuel. This creates 'Efficiency Paradox.'
Energy Efficiency Gap-
A very simple reason for an Energy Efficiency gap to exist is 'inefficient allotment of goods and services by the market.' This leads to the creation of barriers in an economy which makes it difficult to use the resources at the optimum level leading to a gap between 'actual energy use' and 'optimum energy use.' Some of the barriers are manipulated prices of fuel, lack of information and awareness regarding the efficient use of energy among the consumers and, government policies which encourage the consumers to consume more energy instead of focusing on efficient use of energy.
