A wood cube 0.40 m on each side has a density of 750 kg/m³ What mass has to be placed on top of the wood so that its top is just at the water level?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Weight required to be placed on the top of the wood is,

            W = Upthrust force - Weight of the wood
                = (density of water- density of wood) V g

                 = (1000 kg/m3 - 750 kg/m3)(0.4 m)3(9.8 m/s2)

                  = 156.8 N

Mass required to be placed on the top of the wood is,

              M = W / g

                 = 156.8 N / 9.8 m/s2

                 = 16 kg
