Fishery is an industry that deals with catching, processing, and marketing of fishes and other aquatic animals that have a high economic value. Some commercially important aquatic animals that are caught,processed and marketed are the prawns crabs, oysters, lobsters, and octopus.

  • Fishes contribute to the common component of our everyday food.These products that complememt our daily diet include the fish products, prawn, crab, lobster, edible oyster, etc.
  • These form a protein rich diet for human beings.
  • Fishery also plays an important role in any country's economy. This is because a large part of world population is dependent on fishes as a source of food.
  • Fishery is an employment generating industry.Both freshwater fishes and marine fishes are of high economic value.

  • They are rich sources of omega fatty acids that is very essential for the body.This is found in the fish liver oil.
