Predict whether aqueous solutions of the following compounds are acidic, basic, or neutral.
(a) Ba(C2H3O2)2 | (b) NaNO3 | (c) Na2SO4 |
(d) NaCl | (e) Fe(ClO4)3 | (f) AlBr3 |
(a) Ba(C2H3O2)2
Ba(C2H3O2)2 + 2H2O -------> Ba(OH)2 + 2CH3COOH
basic medium because products are strong base Ba(OH)2 and weak acid CH3COOH and strong base dominates.
(b) NaNO3
NaNO3 + H2O ----> NaOH + HNO3
neutral medium because products are strong base NaOH and strong acid HNO3 and they cancell each other effect.
(c) Na2SO4
Na2SO4 + 2H2O -------> 2NaOH + H2SO4
neutral medium as products are strong base NaOH and strong acid H2SO4 and they cancell each other effect.
(d) NaCl
NaCl + H2O ------> NaOH + HCl
neutral medium as products are strong base NaOH and strong acid HCl and they cancell each other effect.
(f) AlBr3
AlBr3 + 3H2O ------> Al(OH)3 + 3HBr
acidic medium, becuse formation Al(OH)3 which is amphoteric and strong acid HBr.
(e) Fe(ClO4)3
Fe(ClO4)3 + 3H2O -------> Fe(OH)3 + 3HClO4
Solution is acidic medium because of formation of weak base fe(OH)3 and strong acid HClO4.
