Explain the Coordination Chemistry and Chemical Speciation Utilized in the Analysis of Fluoride in Water Samples by Fluoride Ion-Selective Electrode.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Fluoride Ion-Selective electrode (ISE) is based on a crystal of lanthanum fluoride (LaF3) doped with europium, Eu(II), at the level of approximately 1% to create crystal defects to improve conductivity. ISE's work on galvanic cell principal. The electric potential generated across a membrane by "selected" ions is compared to a reference electrode. The strength of the charge created is directly proportional to the concentration of the selected ion. The basic formula is: Ecell = Eise - Eref

(potential for the cell) = (potential of the ISE) - (reference potential)

Your one thumbs up will help me lot. Thanks!
