- First of all dont use unorescribed drugs for acute cough which are sold on over counter .

- check for the history of the patient and if doubt then reffer the patient to general physician .

- patient with one or more sign and symptoms should avoid the over counter medicine and should first consult the general physician .

- patient with history of persistent cough more than 7 days should avoid the over counter medicine .

- cough accompanied with fever , shortness of breath , chest pain or ther related issues should avoid over counter medicine .

- patient who are already on certain medication should avoid the ober counter medication to avoid the drug reaction .

- cought that creates difficulty in breathing , night sweats should avoid over counter medication .

- other medical condition like asthama , bronchitis , tuberculosis should avoid the ober counter medicine to treat cough .

- Barkinh cough with inspiratory stridor should avoid over counter medication .
