1. Interaction of cardiac glycosides with prescribed and OTC medications =
a) with Cholestiramine = it binds with digitoxin(a cardiac glycoside) at the gut and reduce its action.
b) With Beta- blockers = as beta blockers depress the SA and AV node and reduce the HR, force of construction. It can also blocks the AV node. So, beta blockers and cardiac glycoside are not used together.
c) With Loop diuratics and Thiazides = diuratics causes hypocalemia. It causes digitoxin toxicity.
d) With calcium = it also can cause digitoxin toxicity.
2. Interaction of diuratics with OTC and other prescribed medication =
a) Spironolactone with ACE inhibitors = it causes sere hyperkalemia and can cause cardiac disarrythmia.
b) Furesamide with NSAIDS = the NSAIDS reduce prostaglandin production and Na+ and water retention. So, both has an opposite actions.
c) Furesamide with Amiloride = Botha has opposite actions on blood potassium level. If both used together it can cause alter blood potassium level.
d) Furesamide with Lithium = it can cause Lithium retaintion and lithium toxicity.
3. Interaction of ACE inhibitors with OTC and other medications =
a) with Thiazides = it can cause hypotension and electrolyte imbalance.
b) with Lithium = cause Lithium toxicity.
c) NSAIDS = it decreases the anti-hypertensive action of ACE inhibitors.
