In Chemiosmosis, the H+ diffuse from the intermembrane space back into the matrix of the mitochondria.  How many ATPs will be generated from 6NADH?

a. 60

b. 18

c. 12

d. 24

Solutions

Expert Solution

During the process of chemiosmosis 1NADH displace 10 H+ ions from intermembrane space to mitochondiral matrix and ATP synthase use this to produce 3 molecules of ATP (1 NADH=1 full rotation of ATP synthase base=3 ATPs made). The electron transfer route from NADH is shown below-

NADH+H+Complex-ICoQComplex-IIICytochrome cComplex-IVH2O (Terminal electron acceptor)

So, 1 molecule of NADH produces 3 ATPs

Now 6 molecules of NADH will produce (6*3)=18 ATPs

So, option-b is the right answer.

Some drugs work by increasing the amount of protons in the intermembrane space of the mitochondria beyond what is normally present under standard conditions. A steeper concentration gradient means it takes more energy to pump protons. Below is a table indicating the concentration of various components in a patient not exposed to the drug. However, you want to predict how these components change when treated with this drug. Next to each component, write “increase”, “decrease”, or “no change” when the...
