Provide a description of the sample space for each of the following random experiments. Identify if the sample space is discrete or continuous in each case.
Note that there can be more than one acceptable interpretation of each experiment. State any assumptions you may have made.
a) Shuffling a standard deck of cards and revealing the top card.
b) Shuffling a standard deck of cards and revealing the top and bottom cards.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Here we have to provide the description of the sample space for the given two experiments.

We will consider various types of sub experiments that can exist for the given two experiments.

The experiments are:-

a) Shuffling a standard deck of cards and revealing the top card.

b) Shuffling a standard deck of cards and revealing the top and bottom cards.

Notice that, for both the above given experiments we can consider three different cases of cards as follows:-

I)The card is either Red or Black.

II) The card is either of Diamonds or Hearts or Spades or Clubs.

III) All 52 cards are different. That is, we will consider each card as a different one.

The sample space for experiment a and b will be as follows:-

a) Shuffling a standard deck of cards and revealing the top card

b) Shuffling a standard deck of cards and revealing the top and bottom cards

This answers your question.

Hope it helps...!
