The genetically modified organisms can be detected based on two methods:-
PCR is used for DNA based detection.
ELISA is used for protein based detection.
Comparison is shown in the following table:-
PCR | ELISA |
1. Detect the genome of the GMO. | 1) Detecte the proteins expressed by the GMO. |
2. Qualitatively measure whether GMO is present in the sample by targetting multiple genes. And also quantitatively measures the amount of transgene DNA present. | 2. Antibodies specifically bind to genetically engineered protein and thus detect the expression of that protein by GMO. |
3. Uses fluorescent dyes for detection. | 3. Uses enzyme for detection. |
4. It can amplify DNA so even a very small sample of DNA can be studied in GMO. | 4. It is not used for amplification so small sample cannot be studied. |
5. More sensitive. | 5. Less sensitive. |
6. Required Gel electrophoresis for visualisation. | 7. The colour change to either activation or production of chromogen is detected by Spectrophotometry. |
