1. What is similar and different about the actions of MAOIs, trycyclics and SSRIs?
2. Why don't patient show immediate effects when being treated with SSRIs?
A. autoreceptors at presynaptic neurons are over-activated
B. SSRIs act to increase the amount of 5HT stored in vesicles and this takes up to 2 weeks
C. it takes a period of time for SSRIs to be able to block reuptake
3. Why would medication and CBT in combination be the most effective way to treat MDD?
1.MAOI's deaminates 5HT, NA,phenylethylamine AND dopamine.
TCA's act by inhibiting active reuptake of biogenic amines like NA and 5HT.
SSRI's act by inhibition of selective reuptake of Serotonin by the Presynaptic neuron..
All the three are the drugs used to elevate mood in depressive illnesses. They all affect monoaminergic transmission in the brain .
2. Auto receptors at presynaptic neurons are over activated .
3. CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) is a therapy in which the Physician talks with the patient and can help him manage the problem by changing his way of thinking and behavior.
In the meantime the drugs will act upon the proper site and give the desired effect.
So the combination of therapy will be effective
