Imagine a 3 x 3 between-subjects factorial ANOVA. This ANOVA was used to analyze data from an experiment in which participants saw a movie that was either silent, in another language, or in their native language. The movie was also either a comedy, a drama, or an action film. Imagine further that there was a significant language x genre interaction effect observed in the ANOVA. If we think about the cells in this ANOVA design, how would we go about examining thesimple effect of language in each of the genre conditions? You do not need to discuss mathematical formulas here, just which values are being compared.
Above we have a situation for ANOVA like:-
Persons looking the movie with 3 categories in language and 3 categories in genre
(Silent, another language, native language) and (comedy, drama, action) respectively. Also there is significant interaction effect of (language*genre)
And we want to examine the effect of langauge in each genre conditions. For such situation we can look for the values of mean sum of squares due to interactions, this will give idea about effect language across different genre.
So here we will check each language category with each genre, whether it is significant or not.
Another approach:-
We can use two way ANOVA since we have two factors "language" and "genre".Here we will vary every level of each factor to other factors' all level.
This will help us to understand the simple effect of language in each genre condition.
