Describe the two main ways by which sound frequency is encoded at the level of the cochlea.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The cochlea in the ear is capable of analysis of sound in an exceptional way . Human cochlea allows the the frequency range between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz perception .

Ways by which the cochlea encodes sound frequency:

1.Resonance:

Along the basilar membrane of cochlea, there are resonators which are tuned to different audible frequencies. There are fibers which are stretched on these basilar membranes like piano. This system of frequency tuned oscillators which are regulated by central nervous system.

2. Travelling wave :

When cochlea is stimulated by a sound wave ,there is motion in basilar membrane of cochlea that travelled from base of cochlea.

The wave amplitude increased with the distance travelled then there was a rapid drop after reaching the maximal point. The point of maximal amplitude depends upon the sound frequency.

  • Higher sounds had maximal points at the base of cochlea.
  • Lower sounds had maximal points at the apex of cochlea.

Thank you.

There are two main ways to describe how loud a sound is. One is that you can describe its intensity, I, measured in W/m2, which is the amount of energy per unit time, per unit area, transported by the sound. However, this is not very close to the human experience of sound loudness. The human experience of loudness (actually like the way most of our senses work) is that each factor of 10 in intensity sounds like the same sized...
