1. Describe the steps in the metabolic pathway in which cells oxidize a five-carbon, straight-chain, saturated fatty acid (valerate; 5:0) to the fragments that enter the citric acid cycle. Show the structures of intermediates and products, and indicate where any cofactor(s) participate(s).
Valerate is a five carbon saturated fatty acid and when it undergoes beta oxidation, it produces two different fatty acids as end products: propionyl-CoA (3 carbon) and acetyl-CoA (2 Carbon).
Both can enter the citric acid cycle or TCA cycle: Propionyl-CoA is converted to succinyl CoA in a step wise manner and the succinyl CoA is an intermediate in the TCA cycle. While the Acetyl CoA can condense with oxaloacetate to produce citric acid. All biochemical reactions are depicted in the following figure:
