Five steps of viral replication:
Attachment, penetration and uncoating, replication, assembly and release.
Attachment: The virus attaches to the host cell via specific glycoproteins to the receptors of the host cell and enters through receptor mediated endocytosis.
Penetration and uncoating: After entering the host cell the virus uncoats the genome.
Replication: The virus uses enzymes and proteins of the host cell to replicate inside the host. It transcribes its genome followed by translation into proteins.
Assembly and release: The virus assembles all the proteins to form the genome and the new viruses are released from the host cell through similar receptor protein interaction.
Bacteriphage infect bacteria, proteins on tail attaches to protein on cell wall, penetration is by direct injection of genome, lysogeny is preferred. Animal viruses infect any eukaryotic cell, spikes, capsids attach to proteins on cell mebrane, no direct injection of genome occurs and latency followed by infection occurs.
