Detailed methodology required in carry out experiment on the effect of adulterated gasoline (gasoline + kerosene) on the spark ignition engine.
Detailed methodology:
Genreally we can use 4-stroke, 4-cylinder, spark ignition engine with near about 60 kW power. This automobile engine can be selected from any automobile engine specification book. After selecting engine we can adulterate (mixing the kerosene into the gasoline and decreasing its performance). For precise measurement we should make the proportion of gasoline:kerosene mixture as 100:00, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50. Normal visible effect of kerosene can be directly with the help of quality of smokes and also from smothness of running of engine. And exact analysis is done with help of test kit of IC engine.
Test kit is well instrumented for measuring various measurements such as mass flow rate of fuel, temperature of the engine, exhaust gas measuring instrument, RPM of the engine, power of the engine etc. By the given proportion of gasoline:kerosene we should run the engine at diffrent load such as 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and full load 100%. During testing of the engine we can measure the mass flow rate by rotameter, speed of the engine by tachometer, temperature of the engine by tranducer, load on the engine by dynamometer, and exhaust gas proportion can be made either by pocket gas analyser or electronic exhaust gas analyser. All these measurement should be done on the given different proportion and given load condition. We can easily find the changes on the performance on the engine.
Previous study shows that emissions are considerably increasing with increasing the concentration of the kerosene in the gasoline. For given proportion Carbon monoxide increases from 20-50%, 25-55% for unburnt hydrocarbon, 3-8% for particalate matter. Fuel consumption also increases by 30 to 35% because calorific value of kerosene is considerably lower than gasoline.
