Expert Solution

c) The concept of solubility of the substances in general arises from the fact that ' like substances has more affinity for the like constituents' and this is the raison d'etre of the phenomenon of solubility in general for eg water disolves in water, metals dissolves in metals. In general it can be more generalised that the polar compounds are soluble in polar solvents and the non-polar molecules are soluble in non-polar solvents.

Thus the polar CO will be soluble in the polar CO2 but in general the solubility of CO2 is greater than the CO (taking water as the reference) due to the more H-bonding in the solution where the CO has less effective dipole. This succintly elaborate the effects of the charge distribution as an important factor in the solubility . The diff of the dipole moments being small in CO(0.112 D) and CO2 (0 D) they would be considerably soluble.

d) The vapour pressure of the gas is dependent on the intermolecular forces of attraction between the molecules. The higher the intermolecular forces between the molecules the less will be the vapour pressure.

Among CO2 & CO the intermolecular forces will be more pronounced for CO rather CO2 due to the dipole moment of the CO will is less but still higher than CO2 ( 0 Debye for CO2) .THus the vapour pressure of the CO2 will be higher than the CO at a particlar temperature.
