Suggest a chemical test from one of these five tests: Permanganate test, Bromine test, Ammonciacal Silver Nitrate test, Sulfuric acid test, or the Sodium metal test that one could use to distinguish between 3-bromo-3-methylpentane and bromobenzene. Mention the expected observations.
Bromine test:
In organic chemistry, the bromine test is a qualitative test for the presence of unsaturation (carbon to carbon double or triple bonds).
An unknown sample is treated with a small amount of elemental bromine in an organic solvent, such as dichloromethane or carbon tetrachloride. Presence of unsaturation in the sample is shown by disappearance of the deep brown coloration of bromine when it has reacted with the unknown sample.
The more unsaturated an unknown is, the more bromine it reacts with, and the less coloured the solution will appear.
3-Bromo -3-methyl pentane does not give positive test with the Bromine due to the absence of the unsaturation. Then we can distinguish from the Bromo benzene.
