Some medical procedures, such as risky elective cosmetic surgery, are perfectly legal to perform, but some doctors may have religious or moral objections to them. Whether such doctors may refuse to provide legal medical treatments based on their objections is highly controversial. To study this issue, researchers sent a questionnaire by mail to a random sample of U.S. physicians. One question was, “If a patient requests a legal medical procedure, but the patient’s physician objects to the procedure for religious or moral reasons, does the physician have an obligation to refer the patient to someone who does not object to the requested procedure?” A total of 1144 of the physicians responded to the survey and 812 of those 1144 who responded answered yes to the above question.
