1.What is a Great evolutionary transformation?

2. Why is the evolution of whales puzzling?

3. What was Darwin's hypothesis about whale evolution?

Solutions

Expert Solution

2. Whales are the largest creatures on earth and they are mammals. whales are different from every other mammals, eventhough they have taken their current form relatively recently like other mamals. It is not possible to relate this marine mammal to any other mammal. Mammals evolved on land, so how did the whales originally evolve? Did they evolve on land from a teresstrial ancestor and went back to sea? Later several paleonthological evidences have been unearthed which pointed to the whale's evolution from terrestrial ancestors which had legs.

3. Darwin hypothesized that whale's evolved from bears. He explained a condition in which selective pressure would have forced bears to evolve into whales. and made sketches based on this hypothesis, but removed them from his book the Origin due to criticism.

1.Great evolutionary transformations are big steps in evolution that paved the way for new forms of life.Like Transition of water animals to land animals, land mammals evolving into marine mammal.

What is the great evolutionary advancement of Angiosperms? Flowers and fruits. Flowers and fruits made co-evolutionary relationships possible with other species. (Gymnosperms have co-evolved with mycorrhizal fungi but we haven't discussed fungi - so we'll stick to Angiosperms.) What are the other species/groups that have co-evolved with Angiosperms and how have they influenced the evolution of flowers and fruits? How have flowers/fruits and those co-evolutionary relationships assisted in the adaptive radiation of Angiosperms and given them an evolutionary advantage over...
