Calculating Relative Risk and Odds Ratios Your final answers should be rounded to one decimal point. Developed depressive Symptoms Did not develop depressive symptoms Total Experienced Bullying 237 1,715 1,952 Did not experience bullying 22 629 651 Total 259 2,344 2,603 1.What is the relative risk of developing depressive symptoms as an adult if that person was bullied as an adolescent in high school? 2.What is the risk (per 1,000 persons) of developing depressive symptoms that is attributable to bullying? 3.What percent of the risk of developing depressive symptoms as an adult is due to being bullied in high school? 4.How much of the incidence (per 1,000 persons) of developing depressive symptoms among the adult population is due to being bullied in high school? 5. What percentage of the depressive symptomology in the adult population is due to being bullied in high school?
First let us reconstruct the information given in form of table:
Depressed | Not depressed | Total | |
Bullied | 237 | 1715 | 1952 |
Not bullied | 22 | 629 | 651 |
Total | 259 | 2344 | 2603 |
1. To calculate the relative risk of symptom development we calculate the probability of symptom development when bullied and not bullied and then divide.
Probability of symptom development when bullied= Depressed number/Total ---- (1)
= 237/1952
Probability of symptom development when not bullied= Depressed number/Total ----(2)
= 22/651
Now the relative risk of symptom development will be:
237/1952
22/651
= 3.593
2. Risk per 1000 people of developing symptoms due to bullying is given by:
Probability of symptom development when bullied X 1000 ---> (3)
Probability of symptom development when bullied = Number of symptoms during bullying/Total number
= 237/259
Now using this in (3) we get:
(237/259) X 1000 = 915.057
This means that out of 1000 people bullied 915 have the risk of developing depressive symptoms.
3. To calculate the percent of risk for an adult we need to take the answer of part 2 and change it into percentage. That means
(237/259) X 100 = 91.5%
4. The incidence of developing such symptoms in adults bullied is given as 237.
5. Percentage of this symptomology due to bullying in high school is already calculated in part 3 as 91.5%.
