6) A tapered surface is to be turned on an automatic lathe. The work piece is 900 mm long with minimum and maximum diameters of 150 mm and 300 mm at opposite ends. The automatic controls on the lathe permit the surface speed to be maintained at a constant value of 200 m/min by adjusting the rotational speed as a function of work piece diameter. Feed=0.25 mm/rev and depth of cut = 3.5 mm. The rough geometry of the piece has already been formed, and this operation will be the final cut. Determine (a) the time required to turn the taper and (b) the rotational speeds at the beginning and end of the cut. (c) Suppose that the automatic lathe surface speed is not available and a conventional lathe must be used. Determine the rotational speed that would be required to complete the job in exactly the same time as in part (a) of the problem.

A lathe is set to cut bars of steel into lengths of 6 centimeters. The lathe is considered to be in perfect adjustment if the average length of the bars it cuts is 6 centimeters. A sample of 121 bars is selected randomly and measured. It is determined that the average length of the bars in the sample is 6.08 centimeters with a standard deviation of 0.44 centimeters. The hypotheses to determine whether or not the lathe is in perfect...

Garrett Boone, Ayayai Enterprises’ vice president of operations, needs to replace an automatic lathe on the production line. The model he is considering has a sales price of $395,900 and will last for 12 years. It will have no salvage value at the end of its useful life. Garrett estimates the new lathe will reduce raw materials scrap by $42,500 per year. He also believes the lathe will reduce energy costs by $23,500 per year. If he purchases the new...

An experiment is planned where an automatic lab would be sent to the surface of Saturn. If there was life in Saturn, the probability that the lab detects it and correctly reports the finding is 0.5. If there never was life on Saturn, the probability that the lab will erroneously indicate the presence of life is 0.45. Suppose that a fair assessment of the probability that life was ever present on Saturn is 0.1. (a) Find the probability that the...

Hi, can you please solve this? A machine that produces a certain piece must be turned off by the operator after each piece is completed. The machine "coasts" for 15 seconds after it is turned off, thus preventing the operator from removing the piece quickly before producing the next piece. An engineer has suggested installing a brake that would reduce the coasting time to 3 seconds. The machine produces 50,000 pieces a year. The time to produce one piece is...
