  1. A study (B. Kristensen et al., J. Intern. Med. 232: 237–245 (1992)) considered the effect of prednisolone on severe hypercalcaemia in women with metastatic breast can- cer. Of 30 patients, 15 were randomly selected to receive prednisolone and the other 15 formed a control group. Normalization in their level of serum-ionized calcium was achieved by 7 of the 15 prednisolone-treated patients and by 0 of the 15 patients in the control group. Use Fisher’s exact test to find a P-value for testing whether results were significantly better for treatment than control. Interpret.

Spilich et al. (1992) ran an experiment in which three groups of smokers participated in a driving simulation video game.   In the Brown et al. (2013): Case Study - Whose Body? (p. 256) by Timothy B. Patrick, Peter J. Tonellato, & Mark A. Hoffman, which perspective presented in the case do you agree with? Are there cases of advances in medical knowledge that do not, at least potentially, threaten to violate the privacy of individual patients? What moral, ethical, and legal protocols can be considered in guiding clinicians in this case? Next, in guiding researchers in this case? This...

This is a summary from Physics World of the paper: L J Wang et al. 2000 Nature 406 277-- "Wang and colleagues begin by using a third continuous-wave laser to confirm that there are two peaks in the gain spectrum and that the refractive index does indeed change rapidly with wavelength in between. Next they send a 3.7-microsecond long laser pulse into the caesium cell, which is 6 centimetres long, and show that, at the correct wavelength, it emerges from...

2) The purpose of a study by Tem et al (A-15) was to investigate the wheelchair maneuvering in individuals with lower-level spinal cord injury (SCI) and health controls. Subject used a modified wheelchair to incoporate a rigid seat surface to facilitate the specified experimental measurements.Interface pressure measurement was recorded by using a high -resolution pressure-sensitive mat with a spatial resolution of 4 sensors per square centimeter taped on the rigid seat support. During static sitting conditions, average pressures were recorded...

The objectives of a study by Skjelbo et al. were to examine (a) the relationship between Chloroguanide metabolism and efficacy in malaria prophylaxis and (b) the mephenytoin metabolism and its relationship to chloroguanide metabolism among Tanzanians. From information provided by urine specimens from the 216 subjects, the investigators computed the ratio of unchanged S-mephenytoin to R-mephenytoin (S/R ratio). The results were as follows: 0.0269 0.0400 0.0550 0.0550 0.0650 0.0670 0.0700 0.0720 0.0760 0.0850 0.0870 0.0870 0.0880 0.0900 0.0900 0.0990 0.0990...

J Morton et al examined gallbladder function before and after fundoplication - a surgery used to stop stomach contents from flowing back into the esophagus (acid reflux) - in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.  The authors measured gallbladder functionality by calculating the gallbladder ejection fraction (GBEF) before and after fundoplication for 12 patients.  The goal of fundoplication is to increase GBEF, which is measured as a percent.  The data are shown below.  Can we conclude that fundoplication increases GBEF functioning?  Construct a 95% confidence interval....
